Mentoring undergraduates in computer vision research

چکیده
The future of our society will be shaped by the young and talented minds going through our colleges and universities today. During the last 14 years roughly 130 undergraduate students from several institutions have participated in our research experiences for undergraduates (REU) program funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF). A large fraction of our students have been able to prepare a paper for submission to a conference, have the paper accepted, and then attend the conference to present the paper. Several participants have even accomplished enough substantial research to result in journal publications. Many past participants are now pursuing graduate studies at various institutions. In this paper, the REU model is described in detail; some examples of student success are discussed; and some observations are summarized.

Integrating research and education at research-extensive universities with research-intensive communities.
Although the Boyer Commission (1998) lamented the lack of research opportunities for all undergraduates at research-extensive universities, it did not provide a feasible solution consistent with the mandate for faculty to maintain sustainable physiology research programs. The costs associated with one-on-one mentoring, and the lack of a sufficient number of faculty members to give intensive att...
متن کاملA Social Capital Perspective on the Mentoring of Undergraduate Life Science Researchers: An Empirical Study of Undergraduate–Postgraduate–Faculty Triads
Undergraduate researchers at research universities are often mentored by graduate students or postdoctoral researchers (referred to collectively as "postgraduates") and faculty, creating a mentoring triad structure. Triads differ based on whether the undergraduate, postgraduate, and faculty member interact with one another about the undergraduate's research. Using a social capital theory framew...
متن کاملA guide to mentoring undergraduates in the lab.
In a typical research group at a research-intensive university, a faculty member will lead a team of researchers that consists of postdoctoral scholars, graduate students and undergraduate students. Postdocs and graduate students are — by virtue of their self-selection, training and maturity — on average, more autonomous, productive and prepared than undergraduate students. With graduate studen...
متن کاملThe Undergraduate–Postgraduate–Faculty Triad: Unique Functions and Tensions Associated with Undergraduate Research Experiences at Research Universities
We present an exploratory study of how undergraduates' involvement in research influences postgraduates (i.e., graduate and postdoctoral researchers) and faculty. We used a qualitative approach to examine the relationships among undergraduates, postgraduates, and the faculty head in a research group. In this group, undergraduates viewed postgraduates as more approachable than the faculty head b...
متن کاملLearning while Teaching Robotics
This paper outlines a mentoring experience in which undergraduate students majoring in Computer Science spent their summer teaching robotics to high school students in Harlem. We describe two programs in which we worked with undergraduates to develop and implement robotics curriculum. Then we report on a valuable and often overlooked piece of the project — the learning experience of the undergr...
